Topic:  Our Ethical Obligation: Engaging in Housing Policy as Social Justice.  Presented by: Emily Harris-Shears, MSW.  During this presentation participants will: (1) Explore implicit bias and mental models around housing. (2) Deepen understanding of historical and current US housing policy and the intersection to social work/social justice.  (3) Be able to articulate the theoretical and ethical connections between housing access, policy, and housing as a social determinant of health.  1.50 Ethical hours.  Pre-registration is required to be awarded CEU credit.



Presenter Bio

Emily Harris-Shears, MSW began practicing as a generalist in 2007 as a family reunification case manager for the child welfare system in Phoenix, Az. In 2009, with a new MSW degree with a concentration in Policy, Advocacy and Community, Emily searched for her passion in the field through diverse roles and working with broad stakeholders. Emily found her passion for housing access in 2011 by chance and has focused the last 13 years on advancing social justice by developing affordable housing, programs to end homelessness, creating policy solutions and collaborating with experts with lived experiences of homelessness. A resident of Missoula, Montana, Emily joined the Franklin Associates team, based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 2024 and enjoys visits to the Capitol City several times a year.
